Descended from the Mountain a Changed Man is a smaller and warmer companion to Into Your Depth. It is a simple abstract image made out of layered, stenciled brushstrokes over a subtle, red-brown fade.

The three brushstrokes are abstract enough to suggest all sorts of interpretations, but I see a road leading up a mountain with, like, a river or cloud passing through. The kind of spiritual title emerged from those simple ingredients, and I think the image and title play well together, all these years later.

Consider bringing one of this small edition of 10 airbrushed stencil paintings into your home or workspace. The soft edges and small, simple presence of Descended from the Mountain a Changed Man packs an evocative punch that keeps giving.

Just Strokes, Series 1 boils painting down to its bare elements: a few brushstrokes on a white background. But, what I love about this series is the combination of austere minimalism and slapdash graffiti.

Each stroke is made out of 4 stencils that I created out of gestural marks I made with a paintbrush and oil paint. Because each stroke can have any four colors in it, once you start combining the simple ingredients of these stenciled brushstrokes, an infinite range of expression becomes possible.

Some pieces have the presence of a figurative sculpture while others explode beyond the edges of the paper.

I have a feeling that there is a Just Strokes painting for you. It’s just a matter of your finding the match and bringing it into your life.

Brushstroke stencils are for more than airbrushing. Each piece from this series of abstract, non-objective drawings is made from a hand-cut stencil based on a gestural oil paint stroke I made in the studio.

Stenciling is controlled and mechanical on the one hand, but each of these drawings is extremely hand-made: I painted the mark, cut the stencil, drew each layer of the drawing. For me, these Just Strokes, Series 4 Drawings are lighthearted pieces that play with constraint and freedom at the same time.

At a basic level, one of my favorite things about art is seeing how colors behave with each other. Layered colors, adjacent colors, I just love seeing the infinite effects they create. And, like a lot of my artwork from this time, it’s a celebration of the possibilities of abstract expressionsism!
